Abstract

For reducing the post-harvest losses and extension of shelf-life of banana, the fungicides were found beneficial. The botanicals are also useful to reduce the post harvest losses and to enhance the shelf-life. A study was conducted to find the best method to control post-harvest diseases and extension of shelf-life of banana through chemicals and botanicals. The treatment of dipping fruits in 0.1 per cent carbendanzem was found more effective for control of decay and crown rot. The second best treatment for this purpose was dipping of banana fruits with 50 per cent extract of Solanum torvum. The best treatment dipping the banana fruits in (0.1%), respectively against untreated fruits. Post-harvest loss of these varieties was reduced, respectively by 95 per cent and 70 per cent against untreated fruits. Firmness of treated fruits for both varieties was found higher than that of untreated fruits during ripening.

Abstract

The experiment was carried out at The Banana Research Station, Jalgaon during 2010 to 2013 with an object to find out the best treatment for control of Sigatoka leaf spot disease of banana (Mycosphaerella musicola). The results of present investigation revealed that the treatment of 0.05 per cent propiconazole + 1 per cent mineral oil recorded its superiority in respect of disease control yield and quality of fruit than rest of the treatments studied. The least disease incidence and intensity (13.16%) The highest yield(22.18 kg/plant)along with B:C ratio of 2.22 was recorded by treatment of spraying 0.05 per cent propiconazole along with oil based formulation i.e. 1 per cent mineral oil than control. Hence the spraying /s of 0.05 per cent propiconazole + 1 per cent mineral oil is recommended for effective control of sigatoka leaf spot disease of banana.

Abstract

Study on screening of germplasm of banana was under taken during 2008-09 and 2009-10 under natural ephiphytotic conditions. The observations were recorded on to sigatoka leaf spot index of banana. All cultivars under study from four genomic groups have recorded susceptible to highly susceptible reactions to the sigotika leaf spot disease (Mycosphaerella musicola) of banana. During both the years of study, all cultivars were recorded susceptible category, of disease reaction. Among the nine cultivars from AAA group, the respective range of PDI were 11.43 to 31.33 and 22.35 to 38.52 for 2008-09 to 2009-10. During both years of study, the highest PDI was recorded with cv. MAHALAXMI. The least PDI was recorded with cv. SHRIMANTHI. The cv. SAFED VELCHI (AB) recorded PDI above 20 and also recorded susceptible reaction. The four cultivars from AAB group recorded PDI in the range of 8.35 to 21.53 and 20.14 to 28.32, respectively for 2008-09 and 2009-10.

Abstract

The field experiment to study the effect of microgranular sulphur (Cosavet Ferits WG) on soil properties, nutrient uptake, growth and yield parametes of banana was undertaken at Banana Research Station, Jalgaon during the years 2007 to 2009. Application of sulphur @ 12 g plant^-1 through Cosavet Fertis (WG) in two splits recorded significantly higher no. of hands per bunch, maximum bunch weight and yield over control. Application of sulphur @ 9 g plant^-1 through Cosavet Fertis (WG) in two splits recorded 137 fingers per bunch, 19.6 kg bunch weight and 87.0 t ha^-1 yield which was found at par with application of sulphur @ 12 g plant^-1 through Cosavet Fertis in two splits. Lower soil pH and EC were reported in the treatments where sulphur was applied through Cosavet Fertis (WG). Higher nutrient uptake was recorded in the treatment of sulphur @ 12 g plant^-1 through Cosavet Fertis (WG) in two splits.
